Vielight Photobiomodulation: Science, Research & Resources

What is Photobiomodulation?

You may know photobiomodulation as “red light therapy.” Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the broader scientific term for the use of specific wavelengths of light—most commonly red and near-infrared—to influence activity in cells and tissues.

Near-infrared light penetrates more deeply into tissue than visible red light, which is why it is used for brain photobiomodulation.

Brain photobiomodulation applies this light across the head and, with Vielight devices, through an intranasal applicator.

How Photobiomodulation May Affect the Body and Brain

Many of the biological effects being studied with photobiomodulation are not unique to the brain. Similar physiological responses are being explored in tissues throughout the body.

Research has examined effects on:

  • Mitochondrial function and cellular energy production

  • Blood flow and circulation

  • Inflammatory processes

  • Oxidative stress

  • Cellular signaling and repair

When PBM is applied to the brain, researchers are interested in how these same physiological effects may influence brain function, neural activity, connectivity, cognition, and overall brain health.

What Makes Vielight Different?

Not all red light or near-infrared devices are designed the same way. Vielight Neuro devices are engineered specifically for brain photobiomodulation, with design features intended to improve light delivery through the scalp and skull and to target the brain more directly than general red light devices.

  • Designed for closer scalp contact

Traditional rigid helmets can leave space between the LEDs and scalp and may be partially blocked by hair. Vielight uses a flexible modular design with concave Vie-LED modules intended to sit closer to the scalp and reduce interference from hair.

  • High-irradiance, strategically placed modules

Rather than relying on a large number of lower-powered LEDs, Vielight uses a smaller number of high-irradiance 810 nm Vie-LED modules positioned over important brain-network regions. Vielight explains that natural scattering of light through the scalp, skull, and tissue creates overlapping areas of coverage across the brain.

  • Transcranial + intranasal delivery

Vielight delivers near-infrared light both across the head (transcranial) and through the nose (intranasal), providing two pathways for brain photobiomodulation.

  • 810 nm near-infrared light

The Neuro uses 810 nm near-infrared light, which Vielight selected for its tissue-penetration characteristics. Vielight cites comparative research showing deeper brain penetration at 810 nm than at 1064/1070 nm.

  • Alpha and Gamma pulsing

Vielight Neuro models offer 10 Hz Alpha, 40 Hz Gamma, or both frequencies in the Neuro Duo 4, providing different options for different goals and uses.

  • Research on the actual Vielight technology

One of the most important differences with Vielight is that the research is not simply about photobiomodulation in general — the Vielight technology itself has been used in a large body of peer-reviewed human research.

Vielight currently reports 30+ published studies, 800+ research participants, 10+ years of research, and collaborations with more than 20 leading institutions. It also states that the Neuro has been featured in more published brain photobiomodulation studies than any other commercial device.

This matters because brain photobiomodulation is highly parameter-specific. Wavelength, irradiance, pulse frequency, positioning, design, and delivery method can all affect how light reaches tissue and how the brain responds. Research on one PBM device cannot automatically be generalized to another device with different specifications.

Vielight specifically cautions against manufacturers relying on research performed with other devices as evidence for their own technology. Its current competitive comparison lists 30 published studies using Vielight technology, compared with fewer than five published studies for other notable brands.

What About a Regular Red Light Panel?

A general red light panel is designed to illuminate a broad surface area, not specifically to deliver light through the scalp and skull. Hair, distance from the scalp, wavelength, irradiance, and positioning can all reduce the amount of light reaching deeper tissue.

Important Context

Many of the Vielight studies to date are small or early-stage studies, which is an important limitation. At the same time, research across different populations and study designs has continued to report similar patterns involving cognition, brain connectivity, circulation, and other measures of brain function.
